Aug 1: After shortlisting about 250 suggestions for an alternative theme for this year's Merdeka celebration, the special committee formed by Pakatan Rakyat decided on the phrase "Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa" (One Nation, One Country, One Soul).
Announcing this during a special press conference at the PKR headquarters today, committee chairman A Samad Said the slogan is based on the submission by one Alhaimi Adam.

Speaking to reporters, PAS secretary general Mustafa Ali said the coalition would now discuss whether to adopt the slogan for state-level National Day celebrations in PR-held states.
"We hope the Federal government would adapt this theme," he said.
The quest for an alternative theme was sparked by intense criticism that the BN government's choice of the theme "Janji Ditepati" (Promises Fulfilled) was politically charged, as it is also the slogan for BN leaders' meet-the-people sessions.
The logo for the celebrations had also come under flak for its partisan symbolism as well as mediocre design, forcing Information, Communications, and Culture minister Rais Yatim to announce its withdrawal.
incorporating the symbol of prime minister Najib Razak's political slogan '1Malaysia', also drew flak from PR leaders, saying it was not selected through the traditional logo designing competition open to public every year.
